Dog On Beach

Dog Beaches of San Diego

San Diego is basically paradise for dogs. Between the year-round sunshine, the salty breeze, and miles of coastline, it’s the kind of city where your dog looks at you with that “can we go every day?” face — and honestly, you can’t argue with them.

We’ve explored quite a few of San Diego’s dog beaches with our own pups and at time with clients’, and these three are the ones we keep coming back to.

1. Del Mar  — Our Favorite 🐶

Del Mar is our go-to, and once you've been, you'll understand why. Located at the north end of Del Mar's 29th Street beach, this is one of those special places that feels like a little community of its own — a wonderful mix of locals who meet here regularly and weekenders who make the trip and never regret it.

The beach is wide open, the energy is easy and welcoming, and it's home to the legendary dog surf contests that have made Del Mar famous up and down the California coast — yes, actual dogs on actual surfboards. Off-leash access varies by season, so we always recommend checking the City of Del Mar's website before you head out. Parking is paid and can fill up fast, so plan ahead and give yourself a little extra time. But those sunset views? Simply the best in San Diego. Worth every minute of it.

2. Ocean Beach  — A Close Second ❤️

Ocean Beach Dog Beach holds the title of one of the first off-leash dog beaches in the entire United States, and it has earned a very special place in our hearts. It’s lively, colourful, and full of character — fully aligned with the OB vibe that locals love.

The beach runs about a quarter mile along the southern end of Ocean Beach, right where the San Diego River meets the ocean. Dogs of all shapes, sizes, and energy levels show up here. The energy is infectious, the community is warm, and the social scene makes every visit feel like a little neighbourhood gathering — just with a lot more tail-wagging. Your dog will almost certainly leave with a new best friend or three, and honestly, so might you.

3. Fiesta Island — A Local Gem for Water Dogs

Tucked inside Mission Bay, Fiesta Island is a bit of a hidden treasure for San Diego dog parents. The off-leash area here is enormous — one of the largest in the county — with calm bay water that’s perfect for dogs who love to swim but aren’t quite ready for ocean waves.

The terrain is flat and because it’s a bay rather than an open beach, the current is gentle and the water is warm (always check with local lifeguard or park ranger for water conditions). It’s a great choice if you want a bit more space to run without the surf getting in the way. Parking is free and plentiful, which is always a bonus.

And remember ...

Whatever beach you choose, always bring fresh water — saltwater and sand can dehydrate pups fast — and rinse those paws before you head home.🐾 Every dog is different, so check with your vet that a dog beach is the right environment for your pup, and always follow local rules and laws.

A note from us:

This guide is written from the heart, based on our own adventures with dogs we love. The information on this page is provided for general informational purposes only and does not constitute professional advice of any kind. The park information above is for general reference only and is based on publicly available information at the time of publication. That said, beach conditions, off-leash rules, parking, and access can change at any time — so we always recommend checking with local authorities and the relevant city websites before you visit. Every dog is different, so if you have any concerns about your pup's health or temperament in a busy beach environment, a quick chat with your vet is always a good idea. Dog owners are responsible for their pet's behavior and wellbeing at all times. While many beach visits are joyful and uneventful, interactions between dogs can be unpredictable — If something doesn't feel right at the beach, move away, communicate clearly with other pet owners about the need for distance, and always keep your dog in full view and under control. Your pup's safety is always worth it.Paws with Nava shares these recommendations in good faith and cannot be held responsible for any changes to beach conditions or policies, or for any incidents that may occur during your visit.
